Hope Harbour, South Korea, is a small, sleepy town mostly populated by retirees. So what could have gorily mutilated that cow? Police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min, Deliver Us From Evil) is still scratching his head when kaiju-level devastation descends, sending cars, buildings and people flying. Most local police are off fighting wildfires, so the town’s only hope is Bum-seok, local hunter Sung-ki (Zo In-sung, The Great Battle) and heavily armed rookie cop Sung-ae (played by Squid Game’s Hoyeon in her hilarious, scene-stealing big-screen debut). But what if, amid their overwhelmed scrambling, they’re all missing a far bigger picture?

Ever since his blockbuster debut The Chaser (MIFF 2009), Na Hong-jin (The Yellow Sea, MIFF 2011) has delighted both audiences and critics by mashing up crime, action, horror, fantasy and sci-fi with pitch-black, self-aware comedy. His fourth feature had the biggest budget in South Korean film history, and took 10 secretive years to reach its splashy Competition debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
