Join us for a chat with Singing Chen, who will unpack the artistry and innovation behind breathtaking room-scale work The Clouds Are Two Thousand Meters Up. Hosted by Emma Roberts.
Singing Chen has been telling stories for over a decade. Through documentary, she explores craftsmanship and environmental issues; through her fiction work, contemporary Taiwan; while, in XR, she investigates space, movement and memory. Chen will be joined in conversation by Australian film producer and XR artist Emma Roberts to discuss her latest work, The Clouds Are Two Thousand Meters Up, and beyond. While exploring the cutting edges of immersive storytelling, the conversation will encompass Chen’s practice more broadly, examining how she works within all forms of the moving image and looking towards the future of XR as an artform.
Singing Chen is a multidisciplinary filmmaker whose work spans fiction, documentary and virtual reality. Her features have screened at major festivals worldwide. Her acclaimed VR experience The Man Who Couldn’t Leave (MIFF 2023) won the Best Immersive Experience prize at the 79th Venice International Film Festival, and she went on to serve as President of the Jury for the 80th edition. Her latest VR work, The Clouds Are Two Thousand Meters Up (MIFF 2026), received the Venice Immersive Grand Prize at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, and is exhibiting at MIFF from 19 to 23 August.
Emma Roberts is a new media artist and a producer whose work explores the liminal space between the physical and the digital. Formerly a producer at Atlas V, her projects – including Gondwana (MIFF 2022) and Turbulence: Jamais Vu (MIFF 2023) – have been shown around the world at Sundance New Frontier, the Venice Film Festival, MIFF, ACMI, Khōj, IDFA, SXSW Austin, MIT, Adelaide Festival, Kunsthal Charlottenburg, Perth Festival and the Experimenta Triennial (2025-7), among others.
