John Cameron Mitchell Presents: Hedwig and the Angry Inch 25th Anniversary
Watch a cult-classic genderqueer musical in the best way – with a witty live commentary by its transgressive and talented director/star.
Hedwig is an East German punk singer on a quest for her other half. As a teenager named Hansel, she seeks a soulmate in American soldier Luther, becoming his wife after a botched genital surgery leaves her with an “angry inch” of flesh between her legs. After Luther abandons Hedwig in Kansas, she sees herself in shy, repressed Tommy, inviting him to share her rock-star dreams. Tommy spurns Hedwig, but goes on to steal her songs to fuel his own success. As she chases Tommy’s tour on a string of low-rent gigs with her band, the Angry Inch, Hedwig doesn’t see how desperately her husband and bandmate Yitzhak yearns to be her …
John Cameron Mitchell’s genderfluid rock musical, based on his off-Broadway stage show, has been reuniting film audiences with their true selves for 25 years. Festivals instantly saw it was special: Hedwig’s clutch of prizes included the Teddy Award at the 2001 Berlinale as well as Sundance audience and directing awards. But Mitchell’s fluid portrayal of love and identity remains a life-changing cult classic because it defiantly troubles categories of drag and trans, nonbinarity and androgyny.
Award-winning director, writer, star and special guest of the festival John Cameron Mitchell joins us for an unforgettable evening of live commentary to accompany his foundational film. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Hedwig and the Angry Inch in stunning 4K, Mitchell will lead audiences on a carousing, mind-bending, behind-the-scenes journey through one of the most transformative creative processes of his career.
“Filmed with ferocious energy and with enough sexual variety to match late Fellini … Mitchell electrifies the movie, with a performance that isn’t a satire of glam-rock performers so much as an authentic glam-rock performance.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
