Made in her signature intimate style, Sofia Coppola’s debut documentary invites long-time friend Marc Jacobs to share his creative sensibility.

Filmmaker Sofia Coppola met fashion designer Marc Jacobs in 1993, when her downtown New York minimalism intrigued the upstart who’d just brought grunge to the Perry Ellis runway. They shared a taste for poised perfectionism, as well as an unusually self-effacing temperament among the big egos in their respective professions. Thirty years on, as Marc’s spring 2024 show approaches, his one-time muse hangs out in his studio, watching him plan the staging as meticulously as the clothes. “In another life I really want to be a theatre director,” sighs the 60-year-old as he enthuses about a creative practice they both know intimately.

Jacobs and Coppola both intuitively gravitate towards the playful and attainable rather than confronting or luxuriating in wealth. Despite its familiar ‘prepping for the big show’ template, Coppola’s disinterest in both industry drama and didactic biography separates this Venice-premiering A24 documentary from more conventional couturier profiles; her fascination with the evanescent is instead perfectly suited to tracing the wandering pathways of creative inspiration and influence that guide her subject’s creative sensibility. Fans of Coppola’s fiction work will appreciate these generous conversations and associative flurries of archival montage alike.

“It’s refreshing to see a documentary so artistic and free of talking heads … It’s so distinctly Sofia Coppola’s style that it’s a must-see for anyone interested in the aesthetics of her career.” – The Hollywood Reporter
