Jûbê ninpûchô

R 18+
Program Strand/s: Restorations

Vividly restored in 4K, this 1993 anime masterpiece follows a ronin, a ninja and a spy on their quest to defeat eight superhuman warriors.

In Edo period Japan, wandering ronin Jubei winds up in a village tyrannised by an iron giant; there, he saves the female ninja Kagero, who decides to join him. Crossing paths with Dakuan, a government spy, they are informed that Jubei must confront the Eight Devils of Kimon – a band of malevolent super-ninja hell-bent on overthrowing the shogunate. As the trio set out to vanquish evil, they quickly learn that it’s kill or be killed.

First released in 1993, this legendary Animate Film production sits alongside Akira and Ghost in the Shell as a classic of its genre – one whose influence is evident in titles such as The Matrix, Kill Bill and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (MIFF 2005). Restored in 4K with the involvement of director Yoshiaki Kawajiri and publicly revived at this year’s Berlinale, this cel-animated wonder is renowned for its action sequences featuring both visceral brutality and virtuosic movement. Expect cutthroat scuffles for power, raunchy sex scenes and plentiful larger-than-life creatures including a snake lady, a living hornet’s nest and a gay assassin who kills with near-invisible electric wires!

“One of the most influential anime movies of all time … a true anime/cult classic, which separates itself from the mass of similar titles due to its elaborate script [and] astonishing battles.” – Asian Movie Pulse
