The Currents
Las Corrientes
Why is a successful, stylish young mother floundering? This sensuous portrait of dissociation refuses easy answers.
Argentinian designer Catalina has just won a prestigious award in Geneva, but something within her has clearly come unmoored. She drifts aimlessly through city streets in her turquoise coat, then casually throws herself off a bridge into the river below. Though she survives the attempt, back home in Buenos Aires she can’t shake a new, debilitating fear of water, which she’s too ashamed to share with her husband Pedro and small daughter Sofia. Her hair becomes increasingly bedraggled – one of the few visible signs of an inner turbulence that buffets Catalina between mental agony, dissociation and an almost sublime sensitivity.
Bowing in TIFF’s Platform strand, The Currents went on to win San Sebastián’s RTVE – Another Look Award for the work at the festival best capturing “subjects related to the female world”. Immersing us in Catalina’s experience, director Milagros Mumenthaler’s deeply observational storytelling invites comparisons to her compatriot Lucrecia Martel (Zama, MIFF 2018), submerging Catalina’s traumas in metaphor through a flow of light and textures.
“This is impressively composed, searching high-art cinema, elevated by its meticulous, silkily textured formal construction.” – Variety
