The Essential Cornishman
A precursor to Mark Jenkin’s acclaimed debut feature Bait (MIFF 2019), this audiovisual stream of consciousness pays homage to the Beat poets via the mythical Cornish west.
Mark Jenkin’s 2016 vision of what may be a cove fisherman’s final voyage, shot on hand-processed super-8 reversal stock and sound-recorded to compact audiocassette, was entirely unedited in terms of writing, performance and visuals, and designed as a homage to the spontaneous prose that emerged from the Beat movement. In the filmmaker’s hands, the grizzly old fisherman is transformed into a mythical poet.
