The wild, natural beauty of the Congo and the people who call this river home are the subjects of Thierry Michel's exotic documentary. Journeying from the mouth to the source of the world's greatest river basin, Thierry Michel encounters the Congo's people and, through them, the depth of Africa's cultural history. Beyond the shadows of poverty, war and tragedy, there is also joy to be found in their rituals, songs and dances. Taking inspiration from Joseph Conrad's novella Heart of Darkness, Michel attempts to penetrate the mythologies of the land, drawing us into this complex, post-colonial world. Among the riches we encounter are medics working in clinics, a child witch, a greedy Christian fundamentalist and a Catholic bishop demanding a metamorphosis of Congan society.
