“A classic of stylistic, abstract cinema.” - Variety

Long before Star Wars, George Lucas debuted on the big screen with this modest science fiction film, starring Robert Duvall in the titular role. THX 1138 was also the first feature for Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope Studio. Transporting us to an Orwellian future, we discover that mankind now lives in all-white underground cities policed by robots, subjugated with a diet of passion-inhibiting drugs. Based on Lucas's own award-winning student short, THX 1138 (presented here in its original feature form) is a bleak vision of the future, displaying little of the commerciality he would later make his trademark.

“As a work of visual imagination [THX 1138 is] special, and as haunting as parts of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Silent Running and The Andromeda Strain.” - Chicago Sun-Times
