In 1883, a man named Rosch discovered a vast mineral deposit on an outcrop of rock on his employer's range. This hill, known as The Broken Hill, yielded a fortune and formed the basis of Broken Hill Enterprises and much of the prosperity of Australia today. New deposits were found, new mines opened, new fortunes made. Today, the process still goes on, making Australia one of the world's largest exporters of ore. The boom days are re-created in this film and the eerie ghost towns of these times are set against the huge smelting and refining works of the present.
