Mea Sherim is a self-contained community, with its own workshops, markets and schools-almost like a voluntary
ghetto-within the modern city of Jerusalem. It's inhabitants are deeply religious, and observe traditional values and practices.

They would prefer to do without the
outside world, but visitors are tolerated on condition that they do not breach rigid rules of behaviour and dress.
