Boyd Webb is usually classified as a sculptor although he does not exhibit three-dimensional objects. His art works are extremely large photographs. In the studio, he constructs elaborate sculptural sets in which figures are photographed. These fictional photographs look as they might be stills taken from the key moments of a movie, alluding to a narrative that can't quite be grasped. The image, the people, the objects are real and specific but the meaning is elusive.
In Scenes and Songs from Boyd Webb, the artist has designed eight new works specifically for the film camera. They expand on recent photographic pieces which have dealt, in an oblique way, with the vagaries of life in a post-nuclear era. In the bleak, inhospitable world they have inherited, people struggle to put together what they find about them into some sort of useful configuration. Meanwhile, the watchers watch.
