It’s 1993, with Massive Attack on the radio, The Piano packing cinemas and ACT UP protests occurring on people’s doorstep. In the French city of Rennes, during rehearsals for a new play, Jacques (Pierre Deladonchamps, the breakthrough star of Stranger by the Lake, MIFF 2013) meets the handsome and much younger Arthur (Vincent Lacoste). As these two lives intersect – one bursting into his true identity while the other is heartbreakingly coming to a close – their conflicting ideas of love set the stage for a life-changing relationship.
Set in the same era as BPM (MIFF 2017), Honoré’s Sorry Angel is not defined by tragedy and bristles with eroticism and imagination. It’s imbued with the energy of classic French cinema, all bookish beauties and cigarette smoke, but with a queer sensibility found only in the vision of a modern master.
