Alma hits the road from her home in the Netherlands to Bosnia, to visit the sick father she has never met. Along the way she picks up her cousin Emir and his best friend Denis for a road trip that takes her deep into her homeland and into herself.
Sendijarević’s visually innovative film offers a deadpan, absurdist view of the world reminiscent of Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise (MIFF 1983). Shaping its own strange reality, it perfectly captures the inertia of being between cultures and between adolescence and adulthood. This stylish, playful film was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Rotterdam Film Festival, heralding the arrival of a filmmaker to keep both eyes on.
