Colour Box

This was one of the first films to be made without the use of a camera. Len Lye was a pioneer in the use of abstract colour images as counterpoint to a musical soundtrack. Frame divisions are ignored and the artist paints his deigns along the length of the film. The image thrown on the screen is completely abstract, but the lively flow of colours and lines gives these films an unexpected charm.

Lye was one of the fortunate workers who was given an opportunity to develop his special talents during the flowering period of British documentary when the G.P.O Film Unit was under the leadership of John Grierson.
