Echoing his earlier works Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring and 3-Iron, filmmaker Kim Ki-duk once again looks to the passing seasons and the liberating possibilities of a taboo relationship. This dispassionate but deeply tender love story is a must-see cinema for fans of Kim Ki-duk's previous films. His latest feature, which recently screened In Competition at Cannes Film Festival, focusses on the ‘passing seasons' of love between Yeon, a sculptress whose marriage is an unfeeling abyss, and Jin, a prisoner on death row who tries to commit suicide. Kim, cast as the all-manipulating prison guard, builds the unlikely lovers' intimacy through a series of offbeat decorating scenes, whereby Yeon brings gifts of seasonal wallpaper and songs each time she visits Jin.
