JUNO AND THE PAYCOCK

Hitchcock took O'Casey's great
tragedy in his capable stride. His script kept closely tothe play and his casting of Sara Allgood as Juno was an inspiration. An almost unknown film actor, Edward Chapman, was excellent as the Paycock, and there were good performances by John Laurie, Maire O`Neill, Kathleen O'Regan, and John Longden. Juno and the Paycock was a truly remarkable film, coming as it did from the same man who directed Blackmail, a. frank thriller, and compares favorably with John Ford's The Informer (1935), adapted from Liam O'Flaherty's novel. Indeed it is superior to John Ford's The Plough and the Stars(1937), also adapted from a play by Sean O'Casey.
