After sixteen years of marriage, Jean leaves his wife, Nadine. At first she is hysterical at the loss of her husband—she has invested her whole personality in the marriage.

Her son, an aggressive, extroverted teenager, returns from London and encourages her to take up a new social life. She meets an English architect and has an affair with him; she takes up a new job doing social research, and later changes it for an even more interesting career. When the architect leaves, the new Nadine accepts his departure calmly.
