The works of the Czech writer, Jan OtcenaSek, who was born in 1924, have already been used as the basis of the films Citizen Brych and Romeo, Juliet and Darkness. Lovers in Year One, directed by Jaroslav Balik, comes from Otcenasek's story and screen-play. The setting is Prague in 1945, immediately after the occupation by the Red Army. A young law student, Pavel, meets a young woman, Helen, through his hobby of film-making. She has spent four years in a concentration camp after her parents were executed, and she has become withdrawn and silent. Her sister wants to leave Prague, as the city reminds her of the camp, but Helen stays and lives with Pavel for a year. She becomes more relaxed, learns again to smile and to love, while he becomes more serious and takes up an interest in politics.
