Along with Peter Tosh, Bob Marley is virtually the only reggae superstar to find fame on the international stage. Born in Jamaica in 1945, Marley was singing and playing homemade instruments by the age of 15—thus beginning an extensive musical career that saw him record and perform from Asia to Zimbabwe, touring across every continent.
A unique live concert movie, Bob Marley is captured here during his final two concert tours. Material is filmed on location in Jamaica in 1979 during the famous Reggae Sunsplash Festival, and on Marley's Uprising tour of Europe which was filmed in 1980 in Dortmund, Germany. Dedicated music documentary filmmaker Stefan Paul combined the two concerts to indicate the strength of Marley's voice and remarkable stage persona. Music lost a legendary performer to cancer less than a year later when Marley died on his way home from a sanatorium in Germany to his mother in Miami. The concerts include some outstanding live versions of Marley smash hits including Zimbabwe, No Woman, No Cry, Get Up, Stand Up and a dub superjam version of his signature tune, Exodus.
The film moves beyond the stage to include footage from Marley's funeral in May 1981 in his home town of Kingston. The ceremony took place in front of tens of thousands of mourners. Coverage includes son Ziggy, still virtually a child, Marley's wife Rita and a legion of collaborators performing red hot tracks in tribute to their friend and hero. Interspersed with unseen footage of Marley at home in Hope Road, Kingston, Bob Marley: Live in Concert is a documentary certain to delight the converted and inspire those unfamiliar with the history of one of the most influential genres of contemporary music.
