As December 2012 approaches, a bombastic director (played by Alex Ross Perry, director of Listen Up Philip, MIFF 2014) arrives in Yucatán with the last dregs of the world's film stock. As his project starts to take shape, he shares his delusional proclamations with anyone who will listen. Slowly, fact and fiction begin to blur.
Loosely inspired by Dennis Hopper's The Last Movie and its documentary sibling The American Dreamer, La última película is a collaborative effort between Filipino auteur Raya Martin (Independencia, MIFF 2010) and Canadian critic Mark Peranson (Waiting for Sancho, MIFF 2009). Shot on a variety of formats – including 16mm, Super-8 and iPhone – this is an ironic film-within-a-film in which the end of celluloid might just coincide with the end of the world.
