An experimental film of animated cutout figures,The Idea was one of the first films to use animation for serious purposes - to depict the creation and birth of an artistic idea. The. emotional effect is due to a, great extent to the dramatic strength and plastic quality of Masereel's original woodcuts from which the film is derived, to the political feeling behind the action and to Honegger's haunting music.
