The film opens with colour, softly modulated movement and the image of a boat slowly drifting away. Laura, the narrator, speaks of the death of her mother and the birth of her first child very soon after.

The mood and style jump to the present: kids, phone calls, and other everyday things, skilfully developing an interplay between the past and present, the living and the dead. The film moves confidently from chit-chat and screaming kids to sequences of memory and fantasy. This is a charming and moving contemplation of the forms of friendship, continuity and love.
