Blue Gate Crossing is a lyrical and tender ode to the difficult, and often precarious phase of moving from adolescence to adulthood.
Flighty Yuezhan has a typical schoolgirl crush on the handsome Zhang, a member of the swimming team, secretly taking photos of him and collecting objects he discards. Too shy to speak with him directly, Yuezhan asks her best friend, the introspective Kerou, to approach him and pass on a love letter. Indulging her friend's youthful wishes, Kerou visits Zhang at the school swimming pool, where he sneaks in at night to practice. The two begin to spend time together and while he slowly develops a crush on her, Kerou's feelings aren't reciprocated. Instead, she reveals a secret she has kept hidden and has been unable to tell anyone until now.
Eliciting three remarkable performances from his lead performers, director Yee Chih-yen has created a knowing and realistic portrait of adolescence. Screened in Directors' Fortnight at Cannes 2002.
