Heathcliff is a runaway black slave, found on the streets of Liverpool by Mr Earnshaw and brought home to the unforgiving, rain-lashed moors of Wuthering Heights. Quickly forming an indelible bond with Earnshaw's young daughter, Cathy, theirs is a magical, doomed friendship whose tendrils will come to shatter their adult lives.
Filmmaker Andrea Arnold (Red Road, MIFF 07; Fish Tank, MIFF 09) has created a Wuthering Heights unlike any other. Brutal, austere and imbued with an overwhelming sense of natural beauty and terror, Arnold's interpretation of Brontë's classic tale accomplishes something entirely unexpected - a primal exploration of the darkened boundaries between man and nature.
