“[Breaks] new ground in contemporary American gay cinema.” - Hollywood Reporter

From American director Ira Sachs (Forty Shades of Blue, MIFF 05) comes the story of two men who fall in love in 1997 New York. Erik (Thure Lindhardt) is a documentary filmmaker whose encounter with closeted lawyer Paul (Zachary Booth) leads to a long-standing affair that neither was anticipating. As the two men begin to build a life together, they must navigate Erik's propensity for one night stands and Paul's drug addiction.

Based on Sachs's relationship with literary agent Bill Clegg (who published his own memoir of these events in 2010), Keep the Lights On is an intensely personal story of love and addiction. Managing to avoid melodrama, this tender portrayal of conflicting emotions over a decade-long relationship is a nuanced voice to add to the canon of cinema on the modern gay experience.
