Comparable to the hit boxing documentary When We Were Kings, Shadow Boxers is an extraordinary work. As a serious study of the burgeoning female boxing scene it's a first rate movie experience, beyond that it is incredibly exciting, furiously paced and fuelled by a pounding hip-hop score with as many TKOs as the athletes themselves. Fantastic!

"This film is as visually stunning as it is politically important. I don't think I've ever seen such a profoundly moving look at women and athleticism, race and body-consciousness as this. It made me long for all the women achievers who have gone unrecorded—not just in sports, but the world at large. Bankowsky's keen eye and intelligence is exemplary I want more and more of this kind of film because it is witty and humane.''—Hilton Als, The New Yorker
