Program in Focus
The 45th MIFF program included the following sections: Contemporary World Cinema, Australian Panorama, Digita (where the worlds of digital media and cinema collide) and Robotica, Melbourne's first comprehensive exhibition and screening programme of all things robotic. Reel Dance, a specially curated programmed of dance works on film and video that encompasses visual records of performance, documentaries, contemporary experimental, conceptual and interpretive dance, was also screened. Programming staples, the Documentary stream and International Shorts Competition continued to feature.

Ida Lupino. A retrospective of the actress-director's films were screened.

Making the Festival

The Melbourne Film Festival began as the idea of a few passionate individuals. A sub-committee, formed from delegates to the 1951 Australian Council of Film Societies film weekend, suggested that a small festival of films in the tourist town of Olinda should be held in 1952.
