BET COLLECTOR, THE

Philippines, 2006 (MIFF 2007, Neighbourhood Watch)

Director: Jeffrey Jeturian

BET COLLECTOR, THE

Producer Josabeth Alonso will be attending the festival and will be introducing the first screening of The Bet Collector

For those without a choice, the name of the game is survival… It's all or nothing.

Amelita is known in the slums of Manila as ‘Amy', an uncanny saleswoman with a knack for cajoling people into parting with their money by placing bets on Jueteng, an illegal numbers game - a lottery, a game of chance. While her disabled husband stays on the couch watching TV, she is caught up in an endless cycle of poverty, corruption and evading the police. Amy's morning prayers of ‘I hope I don't get caught today' mingle her fervent religious beliefs with her superstitions. Finding meaning in numbers everywhere, for Amy, survival and life are a gamble. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

Prize-winner at last year's Moscow Film Festival.
