Turkey, 2008 (MIFF 2008, International Panorama)

Director: Hüseyin Karabey

“Dear love… you are the wide brown valley that I lie on, you are my Marlon and Brando”

In 2003, just before the bombs started falling on Baghdad, fiery Turkish actress Ayca left her house and did the opposite of everyone else - heading straight for Iraq on a search to find her true love, the charismatic B-grade Iraqi actor Hama Ali. Even as the US invaded, Ayca travelled Iraq's breathtaking, hazardous landscape.
With Ayca and Hama Ali playing themselves, and also incorporating real video diaries recorded at the time, My Marlon and Brando is a fictional recreation of real events, as lovers Ayca and Hama Ali strive to be reunited in the midst of a warzone.
“A moving statement on war and the confining artificiality of borders.” - Variety
