AJAMI

Israel / Germany, 2009 (MIFF 2009, International Panorama)

Director: Scandar Copti, Yaron Shani

“Rarely has the tinderbox nature of the Middle East been so accurately lensed, on such an intimate scale.” - Variety

Four characters on separate journeys crash together as individual pieces of a larger puzzle in Ajami, a film that begins with a single act of revenge before spiralling out of control.

First-time filmmakers Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani gather a cast of non-professionals to create a tense crime drama and tragic portrait of life in the city of Jaffa. With differing cultures, religions and nationalities forced to live on top of one another, tensions are set to boil over.

Received a special mention Golden Camera award at this year's Cannes film festival.

“An amazingly authentic picture, powerfully directed.” - Screen International
