DREAM WITH THE FISHES

USA, 1996 (MIFF 1997, International)

Director: Finn Taylor

Terry, is a buttoned-down and uptight loner who has been feeling suicidal since the supposed death of his wife. His lonely past-times involve binoculars and his neighbours' open windows - continuing life in such a fashion is looking like a pretty grim prospect. Chance, and his voyeuristic tendencies, put Terry in contact with the wild Nick, a rambunctious boho type with an equally dour outlook on his short-term future.

Nick's attempt at a liquor store hold-up is coincidental foiled by Terry who proceeds to the Golden Gate Bridge to end it all. Nick pursues Terry and dissuades him from leaping to certain doom with a few crass words about the unpleasant consequences of surviving such a fall. A desperate pact ensues; Nick, who has been given only weeks to live himself, agrees to kill Terry, on condition Terry bankrolls the fulfilment of Nick's lifelong fantasies. Nude bowling with prostitutes, for instance, is followed by dropping acid with a traffic cop.

This refreshing and unexpectedly profound comedy is an auspicious introduction to the work of director Finn Taylor. A buddy film with abundant laughs, misadventures and surreal situations. more than enough to satisfy even the most demanding audience, and a certain Festival hit.
