ONE HOUR PHOTO

USA, 2002 (MIFF 2002, International Panorama)

Director: Mark Romanek

In an eerily atypical role, Robin Williams plays a 'nobody with a dark heart' in this chilling psychological drama. 'Sy the Photo Guy' is one of those people you see but look through. Blending into his surrounds, he is well aware of his customers - their routines and their photos that pass through his lab - especially one very attractive young mother (Connie Nielsen, Gladiator) and her son Jason. Subtly probing comments soon become invasive actions, and Williams' character shifts gear from quirky clerk to silent stalker. This ambitious feature was produced by Killer Films, who host a string of acclaimed titles including Kids, I Shot Andy Warhol, Boys Don't Cry, American Beauty and most recently Storytelling.

"You'd have to check the film's credits to know that Robin Williams stars as Sy, so under-the-radar is his expressively contained performance as a nebbishy photo attendant. In a similarly restrained vein, so too is the non-transparent power of this film, an absorbing and unsettling psychological drama that premiered at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival to positive reception ... At every moment. we feel the emptiness and disquiet of Sy's disturbed little world." - Hollywood Reporter

A name perhaps unknown, but chances are you've seen some of Mark Romanek's groundbreaking music videos, including clips for Madonna, NIN, Beck, Lenny Kravitz, David Bowie adn REM. His videos - two of which have become part of the permanent collection at the New York Museum of Modern Art - have earned him over thirty awards.
