AROUND A SMALL MOUNTAIN

France / Italy, 2009 (MIFF 2010, International Panorama)

Director: Jacques Rivette

“In Rivette-land, there is no life without art and vice versa.” - Screen International

For Kate, a broken-down car and a broken-down life both get a jump start from a chance roadside encounter with mysterious Italian traveller Vittorio. When they meet again at her father's ailing circus, it seems Vittorio may be the spark of inspiration needed to invigorate the listless troupe.

French New Wave master Jacques Rivette balances life and art effortlessly in his latest offering, featuring Jane Birkin as the heavy-hearted Kate and Sergio Castellitto as the irrepressible Vittorio.

'Jacques Rivette moves into the light with a gentle, simple masterwork.' - MUBI
