A WOMAN'S FACE

Sweden, 1938 (MIFF 2012, Facing North: Swedish Cinema in Focus)

Director: Gustaf Molander

A WOMAN'S FACE

Ingrid Bergman in one of the best roles of her career.

Embittered by her disfigured face - the result of a childhood accident - Anna Holm is the cruel mastermind of an underground ring of criminals. When a blackmail scheme goes awry, Anna's intended victim, a plastic surgeon, takes pity on her and reconstructs her face, leading to a profound change in her nature. But she must now protect those she loves from the very crooks she used to lead.

One of three melodramas, including Intermezzo (1936), that Bergman starred in for director Gustaf Molander prior to being snapped up by Hollywood, A Woman's Face was remade by MGM in 1941 with Joan Crawford in the title role in a performance that was bigger but never bettered Bergman's.

“Gustaf especially taught me how to underplay, to be absolutely sincere and natural. ‘Never try to be cute,' he said.” - Ingrid Bergman
