The most controversial film of Cannes 2009.

The latest feature from Lars von Trier (Dancer in the Dark, Breaking the Waves) is a harrowing depiction of marital breakdown starring a grieving couple, Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg (who won Cannes's best actress award for her harrowing portrayal).

Alone in their cabin in the forest of Eden, surrounded by animals in varying states of distress, the couple begin to turn on each other. Part provocation, part satire, but largely a dark exercise in violent self-gratification, this film features graphic scenes of sex and genital mutilation.

When the Danish Film Institute organised preview screenings of this film they served up Bloody Marys to audience members.
