Marta Meszaros, in her latest work, takes up themes from her earlier films, Adoption and Nine Months. The story involves a relationship between two women, Mari and Juli. For twenty years Mari has been living with her husband Feri, a shop foreman who is about to be sent overseas on business.

Mari has been promoted from the factory where she had worked to become director of a hostel for women workers in the country. Juli is married to a technician. Janos, who has become an alcoholic. They have a small daughter, but they find they can no longer live together.

Juli moves into the hostel, but regulations forbid children to live there. Mari helps out by taking the child into her own quarters.
While Juli and Janos discover that they cannot endure their separation, Mari, under the influence of her relationship with Juli, comes to realize that her twenty years of marriage have only cloaked a conventional relationship in which she gave up her own individuality.

The two women become close friends, and helping each other, refuse to accept the conditions in which they find themselves...
