"The most impressive of [Brocka's] films... an unforgettable portrait which invites interpretation as an allegory for the whole of the underdeveloped world." – The Guardian

Lino Brocka is regarded as the greatest director the Philippines has ever produced, a man whose incisive cinematic eye cut through the lies of the Marcos regime. In the Claws of Light is his opus, an odyssey through the impoverished underbelly of Manila that showed the world the true corruption of the city he called home.

Julio, young and naive, comes to Manila to try and find his childhood sweetheart, Ligaya, long since sold into prostitution. With corruption around every corner, Julio finds himself thrown up against the uncaring immensity of the city that swallowed her, but in a place like Manila, even success can hold the seeds of destruction.
