In 2010 Debra Granik was a guest at MIFF to present Winter’s Bone, a film she directed and co-wrote, which went on to be nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actress for Jennifer Lawrence in her breakout role. Returning to MIFF for 2018 to present her new film Leave No Trace, Debra will be in conversation with MIFF Premiere Fund filmmaker Miranda Nation to discuss her craft and experiences as an independent woman filmmaker.

Debra Granik is an an American filmmaker whose first feature film was Down to the Bone (2004), which she directed and co-wrote. It world-premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where Debra won the Directing Award and the film’s star Vera Farmiga won a Special Jury Prize. Debra went on to direct and co-write Winter’s Bone, which was nominated for four Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actress for Jennifer Lawrence, Best Supporting Actor for John Hawkes and Best Adapted Screenplay. In 2014 Debra completed her documentary feature Stray Dog and her new film as director and co-writer Leave No Trace (2018) premiered at Sundance, screened in the Cannes Directors' Fortnight and screens at MIFF on 3 and 5 August.
Miranda Nation is an Australian filmmaker whose first short film Eli the Invincible (2011) won the SBS Programming award at Flickerfest, and was selected for the Melbourne International Film Festival where Miranda participated in the Accelerator Lab for emerging Australian directors. Her short film Perception (2013) won the Dendy Award for Best Short Film at the Sydney Film Festival, was nominated for an AACTA Award and had its international premiere at Clermont-Ferrand. In 2015 Miranda received a Director’s Acclaim grant from Screen Australia to work as Director’s Attachment on Cate Shortland’s feature film Berlin Syndrome (2017). Supported by the MIFF Premiere Fund, Miranda’s debut feature film Undertow (2018) will world premiere this year at MIFF where it screens on 9, 12 and 18 August.
