MIFF Talks - Discovering African filmmaking Unclassified: no age restriction
MIFF Talks presented by
African cinema is still largely under-represented, but it is also undergoing a resurgence, with bold new films capturing the attention of audiences around the globe and reappraisals of lost classics. This panel will address what it is that characterises African cinema and how the various national film industries within Africa have changed over the decades.
Panellists include Lizelle Bisschoff and Dorcas Utkovic. Moderated by Santilla Chingaipe.
Lizelle Bisschoff is a researcher and curator of African film and the founder of the Africa in Motion Film Festival in Scotland. Lizelle holds a PhD in African cinema from the University of Stirling in Scotland, in which she researched the role of women in African film. She has published widely on sub-Saharan African cinema and is a lecturer in Film and Television Studies at the University of Glasgow, where she teaches African cinema.
Dorcas Utkovic is an award-winning Melbourne producer, writer, director, fine artist and artistic/project officer. She studied Fine Art in South Africa and recently completed a Master of Arts in Writing through Swinburne University of Technology. She is the producer and presenter of OZ AFRICAN TV, the creative producer of One Beat One Love, a project officer for Multicultural Arts Victoria and the programmer of Emerge in Yarra 2018.
Santilla Chingaipe is an award-winning journalist and filmmaker who has spent nearly a decade working for SBS World News. She presented the documentary Date My Race (2017) and is the writer/director of documentary short Black as Me (2017). Santilla created and curated Australia’s first anti-racism all day festival, Not Racist, But... with the Wheeler Centre, she writes regularly for The Saturday Paper and is a member of the federal government’s advisory group on Australia-Africa relations.
