LAKE, A

France, 2008 (MIFF 2009, International Panorama)

Director: Philippe Grandrieux

LAKE, A

“Confirms Grandrieux as a true original.” - Variety

Installation artist and cinematic visionary Philippe Grandrieux (La Vie Nouvelle, MIFF 03) creates a monochromatic, snow-bound wilderness, a harsh, remote wonderland occupied by epileptic woodcutter Alexi and his family.

Alexi carries a barely suppressed desire for his sister Hege - but the arrival of a stranger threatens to upend his isolated world.

With A Lake Grandrieux has crafted a haunting work, one that sees him skilfully wield the camera to express the raw emotions of the characters.

A Lake was the recipient of the Venice Horizons Award at last year's Venice Film Festival.

“Distinctive for the unique, self-enclosed world that Grandrieux creates with a palette reduced almost to monochrome.” - London Film Festival
