STARRED UP

2013 (MIFF 2014)

Director: David Mackenzie

"This is in-your-face filmmaking: raw, uncomfortable and boasting tremendous performances from its leads." – The Independent

Nineteen-year-old Eric (Jack O'Connell) has had a rough time of it, shuttled between state care facilities after the death of his mother. Now incarcerated in prison, he finds himself caught between a cruel warden, an anger-management therapist, a brutal kingpin and his own imprisoned father (Ben Mendelsohn), whom he's not seen in 15 years. With danger coming from every turn, the resourceful Eric must rely on his wits to survive this vicious new world.

Award-winning filmmaker David Mackenzie (Young Adam, MIFF 04) directs a script from former prison therapist Jonathan Asser, while Skins star O'Connell gives an extraordinary performance as Eric.

"Asser's script is rich in detail, drawing you into the tough, jittery ecology of jail without romanticising it." – The Scotsman
