BLUEBEARD

BARBE BLEU

Director Catherine Breillat / 2009 / France

“This quietly surreal Freudian fable is an elegant exercise of style with a sly humorous undertow.” - Screen International

Recalling her own childhood antics, contentious French auteur Catherine Breillat (Anatomy of Hell, Romance) retells Charles Perrault's classic serial killer yarn.

Young Catherine reads out the children's story of the misogynistic ogre Bluebeard in order to frighten her older sister Marie-Anne. Incorporating herself into the plot as Bluebeard's new wife, Catherine tells the tale of the baleful but charming brute who asks that his wife obey only one rule: to never open the locked room in his house while he is away.

One of Breillat's most accessible films yet, Bluebeard nonetheless bears the unmistakable stamp of the controversial French director.
