LIBERTY OF NORTON FOLGATE, THE

The Liberty of Norton Folgate

Director Julien Temple / 2009 / UK

“Madness have made the album of their career.” - Mojo

Iconic UK ska band Madness is at it again - after over a decade of silence, they've released The Liberty of Norton Folgate, a sweeping love letter to their native city of London, and its very chequered history.

Coinciding with the album's release comes this film from Julien Temple (Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten, MIFF 07; The Filth and the Fury), which takes the humble ‘concert film' into new territory. Melding raucous concert footage from the historic Hackney Empire theatre with theatrical tableaus scattered around old London town, The Liberty of Norton Folgate resurrects the ghosts of London's past to tell the tale of a city born in blood, mud and immigrant dreams.
