ONE MORE TIME

Director Jerry Lewis / 1970 / USA

A late Rat Pack comedy gets the distinctive Jerry Lewis treatment.

In this sequel to crime caper spoof Salt & Pepper, Sammy Davis Jr and Peter Lawford reprise their roles as the eponymous Soho nightclub owners. When his twin brother is murdered by a gang of diamond smugglers, Pepper elects to impersonate him, and the duo set off on a comically surreal mission to bring the killers to justice.

In his only directorial outing spent entirely behind the camera, Jerry Lewis takes every opportunity to imbue One More Time with absurd humour, song and dance routines and the bright colours of swinging London. There's also an emotional undercurrent to all the kookiness: the protagonists' relationship here containing subtle parallels to Lewis' own fractured, and by then long-mourned, creative partnership with Dean Martin.
