'A heartbreaking counterpoint to big war spectacles, beautifully performed by Christina Ricci, Cate Blanchett, Johnny Depp and John Turturro.' – Associated Press

When Sally Potter examines history, she does so fearlessly, interrogating the transformations of the past with fluidity and freshness. Like Orlando before it, The Man Who Cried refused to adhere to formula or convention – even as it explored a tale of life, love, betrayal and survival during times of conflict.

Growing up in England, Russian Jewish refugee Suzie (Ricci) dreams of being reunited with her father in America, endeavouring to forge a performing career in Paris to finance her efforts. Russian exile and dancer Lola (Blanchett) becomes her friend, and gypsy horse-handler Cesar (Depp) her true love, but opera star Dante Domino (Turturro) proves a treacherous acquaintance, particularly once the Second World War hits and the Nazis arrive.

As well as showcasing Potter’s talent for emotionally rich filmmaking, The Man Who Cried also marked the final feature shot by famed European cinematographer Sacha Vierny (Hiroshima Mon Amour, MIFF 1960; Last Year at Marienbad; Belle de Jour).
