PLOY

Director Pen-ek Ratanaruang / 2007 / Thailand

Every relationship needs its fantasies; some are more real than others.

Arriving back in Thailand after a decade abroad, Wit and his wife Dang check in to a five-star hotel downtown. As Dang sleeps, a jet-lagged Wit retires to the hotel bar where he meets Ploy, a Lolita-like 19-year-old girl waiting for her mother. Wit extends a seemingly innocent invitation for Ploy to rest in his hotel room, but her presence - and the questions it raises - exposes a gaping hole in Wit and Dang's seven-year marriage. This dream-like feature from Pen-ek Ratanaruang (Invisible Waves, MIFF 06) explores the dark corners of a long-established relationship, as the repressed fears and desires of the trio percolate to the surface.
