Tickets

MIFF accepts a range of concessions to help keep the festival accessible to all. We offer concession tickets on events (where listed) to MIFF Members, full-time students, pensioners, Health Care Card holders and seniors. Valid concession or membership ID must be presented when buying or collecting tickets and upon entry to the cinema.

Concession Membership prices apply to the holders of a card for the following concession types only: Seniors, Health Care Card holders, Carer Card holders and full-time students. Proof of concession is required on application.

Members of the following bodies and industry groups are entitled to purchase tickets at the concession rate (where listed): MEAA, AFI, SPAA, ACS, ADG, AWG, ASE, City of Melbourne (staff), MQFF and ACMI. Valid concession or membership ID must be presented when buying or collecting tickets and on entry to the cinema. Industry concessions are not valid for the purchase of a concession-priced MIFF Membership.

MIFF is a cashless festival. Payments can be made on this website by credit card (Visa or MasterCard) or MIFF gift voucher. MIFF Box Offices only accept credit cards (Visa or MasterCard), EFTPOS and MIFF gift vouchers.

You can present your tickets on your phone, via the PDF ticket you received via email, or by logging into the MIFF App to access your ticket.

If you prefer, you can print your tickets. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or newer, which can be downloaded for free from Adobe’s website.

Each ticket is valid for one entry to one session only. Every ticket is scanned for entry into the cinema.

If a session is listed as ‘Standby’, that means there are currently no tickets available. A small number of tickets may become available to purchase at around 5pm the night before the session – please check the website for any releases.

If you are unable to book a ticket in advance, you can join the standby queue at the venue on the night. Please look for the designated standby queue area located near the Box Office of each venue and ask staff for venue-specific details. Once patrons are seated and the session has commenced, spare seats are counted. If there are empty seats, you will be able to purchase a ticket at normal festival prices. You must remain in the standby queue at all times to be eligible.

Admission to sessions is not guaranteed, but standby queues generally have a high success rate.

MIFF has a high volume of patrons – especially at busy times. Having general admission for most sessions allows us to get audiences in quicker and screen films on time. Some special events, such as the Opening Night Gala, may utilise reserved seating. To guarantee a good seat, please arrive early for your sessions.

Classification

To allow MIFF to screen the most up-to-date films from around the world, the Australian Classification Board grants the festival special customs and censorship clearances.

Unclassified 18+ is not the same as an R18+ rating, but it acts in a similar way: nobody under 18 (including infants) can legally view a film with this exemption, even with a parent or adult guardian. One of the key differences between R and Unclassified 18+ is that the content will not be as per an R movie – rather, the film has not yet been classified as suitable for anyone other than an adult audience.

Please note that classifications are sometimes updated during the festival; to see whether a film you want to see has been officially classified, please check the website. For further information regarding film classification, please visit classification.gov.au.
