Ticket FAQs

General

Pre-festival, the MIFF Box Office is open at ACMI from 12 noon until 4pm. During the festival, MIFF Box Offices are open at CBD venues from one hour before the first MIFF session of the day until the start of the last session of the day.

If you need to collect either a MIFF Membership card or a MIFF Festival Passport (available exclusively as part of a Deluxe Membership), please head to the MIFF Box Office at ACMI.

The MIFF call centre can be reached on 03 9087 3395. Please note: this is a new phone number (from 2021). Pre-festival, this number is staffed from 11am to 4pm, seven days a week. From 6 to 15 August, this number will be staffed from one hour before the first MIFF session of the day until the start of the last session of the day. From 16 to 22 August, this number will be staffed from 10am to 9pm.

MIFF will be managed in accordance with the Victorian Government’s latest COVID-safe settings and restrictions. More information can be found here.

Tickets

MIFF accepts a range of concessions to help keep the festival accessible to all. We offer concession tickets on events (where listed) to MIFF Members, full-time students, pensioners, Health Care Card holders and seniors. Valid concession or membership ID must be presented when buying or collecting tickets and on entry to the cinema.

Concession Membership prices apply to the holders of a card for the following concession types only: Seniors, Health Care Card holders, Carer Card holders and full-time students. Proof of concession is required on application.

Members of the following bodies and industry groups are entitled to purchase tickets at the concession rate (where listed): MEAA, AFI, SPAA, ACS, ADG, AWG, ASE, City of Melbourne (staff), MQFF and ACMI. Valid concession or membership ID must be presented when buying or collecting tickets and on entry to the cinema. Industry concessions are not valid for the purchase of a concession-priced MIFF Membership.

MIFF is a cashless festival. Payments can be made on this website by credit card (Visa or MasterCard) or MIFF gift voucher. MIFF Box Offices only accept credit cards (Visa or MasterCard), EFTPOS and MIFF gift vouchers.

After booking your tickets online, you will receive an email with your tickets attached as a PDF. In order to print your tickets, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or newer, which can be downloaded for free from Adobe’s website. Each ticket is valid for one entry to one session only. Every ticket is scanned for entry in to the cinema.

If a session is listed as ‘Standby’, that means there are currently no tickets available. A small number of tickets may become available to purchase at around 5pm the night before the session – please check the website for any releases.

If you are unable to book a ticket in advance, you can join the standby queue at the venue on the night. Please look for the designated standby queue area located near the Box Office of each venue and ask staff for venue-specific details. Once patrons are seated and the session has commenced, spare seats are counted. If there are empty seats, you will be able to purchase a ticket at normal festival prices. You must remain in the standby queue at all times to be eligible.

Admission to sessions is not guaranteed, but standby queues generally have a high success rate.

MIFF has a high volume of patrons – especially at busy times. Having general admission for most sessions allows us to get audiences in quicker and screen films on time. Some special events may utilise reserved seating, such as the Opening Night Gala. To guarantee a good seat, please arrive early for your sessions.

MIFF Play / Streaming

Have a read through this list of FAQs to see if your question is answered. If it’s not, you can call 03 9087 3395 or email boxoffice@miff.com.au for assistance.

On the top-right corner of the MIFF Play landing page, you’ll find a large red button that says ‘Create an account’. When you click this, you will be prompted to enter your email address and set a password.

Simply click ‘Forgot your password‘ on the sign-in page, enter the email address you used to create your account, and a link to reset your password will be sent to you.

Please make yourself aware of the advertised viewing window for the film you have streamed, as these vary across different titles. You are responsible for viewing films within these windows as no extensions can be offered. No refunds will be available for unwatched or unfinished film streams.

Most films on MIFF Play will be accessible from 9am AEST on Saturday 14 August 2021 through to 11.59pm AEST on Sunday 22 August 2021.

As soon as you press play on most films, you will have thirty-six (36) hours to complete your viewing. You are reminded that some films on MIFF Play may have shorter viewing windows. Please check each one carefully.

You can rent the films from the individual session pages, bundle pages or shorts packages page. On MIFF Play, there is no cart or basket option. To purchase a film for individual titles, click into the session page and select ‘Pre-purchase’ above the synopsis.

This will open up a payment window for you to enter your credit card details and finalise your transaction. Once you have successfully purchased the film, it will appear in your LIBRARY – ready to be viewed during the festival viewing period.

Please add the unique member discount code you have been provided as part of the checkout process. When prompted, tick the box that states ‘I have a promo code’, enter the code in the box that appears and click ‘Apply’.

If you did not receive the discount code, please contact the Membership Coordinator via email: membership@miff.com.au.

Yes, capacities are limited, so it is possible films will sell out. If there is something you don’t want to miss, we recommend pre-purchasing.

Capacity limits are set for a variety of reasons, and each film has a different set of conditions. Capacities can be directed by a combination of the following: sales agents, distributors, filmmakers and the Australian Classification Board.

Streaming on MIFF Play is only available in Australia. If you are browsing the program from somewhere else in the world, you will not see an option to purchase as the films are geoblocked to Australia.

If you have an international VPN turned on, this will also block your ability to purchase films and you will not see the ‘Purchase’ button on any films or bundles. Please turn it off to access the program.

Films on MIFF Play are only available to stream if you are based in Australia. If you have an international VPN, please ensure it is turned off.

If your internet connection is poor or inconsistent, you may experience problems during playback.

Buffering is a result of slow or strained internet. Unfortunately, we are unable to fix this for you from our end. Try pausing the stream for a couple of minutes and letting it load, or you may wish to reduce the quality from 1080p to 720p.
