audio description access symbol Audio Description

Select sessions at MIFF will screen with an Audio Description (AD) track. This service provides additional narration and commentary that aims to describe body language, expressions, movements, key action and the visual content of the film, thereby offering additional information about the film through sound. Narration occurs during the natural pauses in the audio, and sometimes during dialogue if deemed necessary. Audio description units are available for collection from the MIFF Box Office at the venue. Please see a MIFF FOH Staff member when you arrive for assistance.

The following sessions will screen with Audio Description:

17 August, 11.15am, ACMI 2 (CBD)

Please note: For this session, the Audio Description track will play through the main cinema speakers and all patrons in the cinema will hear the Audio Description track. Audio Description provides additional narration and commentary that aims to describe body language, expressions, movements, key action and the visual content of the film, thereby offering additional information about the film through sound.

All other sessions will have the Audio Description track available through a device with headphones that can be borrowed from the MIFF Box Office. For any questions regarding access services available for this film, please contact access@miff.com.au.

Auslan access symbol Auslan-Interpreted Events

To engage a wider audience for MIFF’s program of films and events, Auslan interpreters will be present at a selection of Talks, introductions, Q&As and special events throughout the festival.

The following sessions and events will be Auslan-interpreted:

13 August, 11am, ACMI 1 (CBD)

Please note: This session will feature an introduction and post-film discussion in Auslan from a panel of Deaf filmmakers and artists, and the film will screen with Open Captions.

The intro and post-film discussion will be conducted entirely in Auslan, with spoken-English interpreters provided to allow access for all patrons. This is an opportunity to gain insights into how Deaf and hard-of-hearing people experience film and, in particular, The Tuba Thieves. Awareness of Deaf culture and language is an advantage, as certain concepts and turns of phrase may not be explained; however, all patrons are welcome to attend and experience this unique event.

Deaf community panel members will be announced soon. For any questions about access services for this session, please contact access@miff.com.au.

12 August, 2pm, The Wheeler Centre (CBD)
15 August, 6.30pm, ACMI 2 (CBD)

To book a ticket to an Auslan-interpreted event, please see How to Book Your Ticket to ensure MIFF can provide the best service.
