HUKKLE

Director György Pálfi / 2002 / Hungary

Twin Peaks meets Microcosmos in this multi-award winning gem that has captivated Festival audiences world-wide.

An old peasant sits by the side of a road hiccupping in a slow, rhythmic fashion. The sun beats down, and life, as usual, continues around him—women sew, grass grows and men bowl, all intercut with the old man's hiccups. However there is a sense that something is going on beneath the surface in this seemingly idyllic world. Darker imagery begins to pepper the film, and when a murder occurs, the film is infused with twists and surprises. Hukkle has no dialogue, but is far from a silent film, as it employs an elaborate structured soundtrack of sounds. Surrender to this engrossing, utterly original cinematic experience.
